Is is possible to use the 3 point fertilzer spreaders like you can buy at TSC (picture linked below) for both fertilzer and seed spreading? I can't think of a reason why not, but I've never used one and don't know about clogging or other potential problems for dual uses. I would be using it to spread bermuda seed (just overseeding) in the spring and rye in the fall and fertilzer when appropriate.

Generally you can use this type of spreader for fertilizer, lime, and seed. You may have to do some calibration for each. I use a similar towed spreader for all three. I have found it best to use pelletized fertilizer and lime. The bulk varieties that have many different particle sizes ranging from dust to lumps tend to bridge over. ....

I use the same type of spreader for everything granular,like the last post, it will take time to learn the rate of flow and ground speed mixture,but it works for me. I even spread ice melt & brome seed,but I attached two small springs to the agetater to keep from bridging. Keep in mind when you use it for fertilizer of any kind,wash off your spreader & tractor when your done, this will prevent rust. ....

Powdery materials sometimes get packed and then do not "flow" as they are supposed to through the slot in the bottom of the spreader. Thus the packed material "bridges over" the slot stopping the spreader from working. A spreader should have some kind of agitator to jostle the material to prevent this from happening. ....

Broadcast spreader for fertilizer; I had a mini disaster with a $300 Fleet Farm spreader with bulk 17/47% nitrogen/phosphorus fertilizer. I had the two agitators going(ie the PTO on) without the little doors open enough for the fertilizer to flow out. Heat built up and fused the fertilizer in the bottom of the coned shaped bin. I had to hand broadcast 700-800 lbs of fertilizer to get to the bottom of the bin and break up the neo-geological rock formation with a sledge hammer. The lower most agitator no longer turned and cost me $50 for creative welding to disassemble and fix.I'm not sure if the high phosphorus content predisupposed the fertilizer to fuse. At any rate, don't agitate without spreading. Emptying out by hand was a 3 hr job. ....

You may need to mix sand with your seed to keep it from spreading to heavy. Works pretty good. ....
